Exta Oppong Tweneboa, DNP, PMHNPFounder & Owner

Exta Oppong Tweneboa, DNP, PMHNP is the founder and owner of Elite Functional NP Institute. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with clinical experience in both inpatient psychiatric hospitals and outpatient mental health settings.

Throughout her clinical practice, Dr. Oppong Tweneboa has worked extensively with patients in acute phases of mental illness, caring for individuals across a wide range of psychiatric diagnoses. Her experience includes treating complex and severe mental health conditions, as well as managing patients who require higher-dose pharmacologic interventions due to symptom severity. Through this work, she observed firsthand the significant burden many patients experience from medication side effects and the limitations of medication-only treatment models.

Motivated to better understand the underlying contributors to psychiatric illness, Dr. Oppong Tweneboa engaged in independent research that introduced her to integrative and functional medicine approaches within mental health care. Recognizing the growing evidence supporting the role of metabolic health, nutrition, inflammation, hormones, trauma physiology, and lifestyle factors in psychiatric outcomes, her professional interests shifted toward a more comprehensive, systems-based model of care.

She subsequently completed a rigorous, year-long fellowship in integrative medicine. The depth and clinical relevance of this training fundamentally reshaped her approach to psychiatric treatment and reinforced her belief that integrative principles should form a core foundation of mental health care rather than remain adjunctive or inaccessible.

However, Dr. Oppong Tweneboa also recognized a significant barrier within the field: high-cost, time-intensive integrative training programs that are not feasible for many practicing clinicians. In response, she founded the Elite Functional NP Institute in 2026, intending to democratize access to integrative psychiatry education.

Elite Functional NP Institute was designed to break integrative psychiatry into focused, affordable continuing education modules, allowing providers to build competence incrementally while remaining within the ethical and professional scope of practice. Through this work, Dr. Oppong Tweneboa remains committed to advancing provider education, improving patient outcomes, and elevating the standard of psychiatric care.
